INTRODUCTION
Ofelia: Benvenuti! Welcome back to ItalianPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate, Season 2 Lesson 25 - Enjoy the Italian Summer While it Lasts!
Francesca: Intendi il cinema all'aperto?
Francesca: Ok, ok! Mi hai convinto! ...ma sembra sul punto di piovere!
And now, let’s hear it with the English translation.
Ofelia: Daniele asked me if by any chance you would want to come to the cinema tonight, too.
Francesca: Intendi il cinema all'aperto?
Ofelia: Do you mean the outdoor cinema?
Ofelia: Yes, it's the free event organized by the film library and the municipality.
Ofelia: Yes, I'd like to, but don't you think it will rain tonight?
Mauro: Vabbè! se piove, ci ripariamo! Dai! non fare tante storie!
Ofelia: Come on! If it rains, we'll take shelter. Don't make such a fuss!
Francesca: Mah...
Ofelia: But...
Ofelia: In a little while, summer will finish, and we'll have to get back to the same old routine...
Francesca: Ok, ok! Mi hai convinto! ...ma sembra sul punto di piovere!
Ofelia: OK, OK! I'm convinced! But it seems like it's about to start raining!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ofelia: "You should knock off the usual routine and go on a trip."
Ofelia: La prossima espressione è
Ruggero: fare storie,
Ofelia: Che letteralmente significa “to make issues” e che corrisponde all’inglese “to make a fuss about something.”
Ruggero: Si usa solo nella lingua parlata.
Ofelia: Un esempio?
Ofelia: “My children make a great fuss when they have to eat vegetables.”
Ofelia: Che significa “to seem about to” o “to be about to.”
Ofelia: "The tower is leaning so much, that it seems about to collapse."
Ruggero: Ero sul punto di addormentarmi.
Ofelia: “I was about to fall asleep.” Ora passiamo alla grammatica.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ofelia: In this lesson, you’ll learn about reported speech when there is a verb that means “to ask” in the main clause, such as
Ruggero: Chiedere or domandare
Ofelia: First, let’s remember that in this case, the reported speech isn't introduced by the conjunction che, meaning “that,” but by se, meaning “if" or "whether.”
Ruggero: Exactly.
Ofelia: Now, we're going to see what happens to reported speech when in the main clause the verb is in the past and refers to the act of asking or doubting about something.
Ruggero: The rules change a little, and we will need the subjunctive, il congiuntivo.
Ofelia: First let’s look at a direct speech example.
Ofelia: “The teacher asked, ”Do you know this book?””
How does it change in reported speech?
Ofelia: “The teacher asked if I knew that book.”
Let’s have a closer look at the verbs. First, can you repeat both of the sentences?
Ruggero: L’insegnante ha chiesto, “Conosci questo libro?” has changed to
Ofelia: conosco, indicativo presente, has changed to conoscessi, congiuntivo imperfetto. This sounds quite difficult…
Ruggero: Yes, it is difficult. Even Italians don’t use it correctly. We often say L’insegnante ha chiesto se conoscevo quel libro.
Ofelia: I see, conosco, indicativo presente, has changed to conoscevo, indicativo imperfetto.
Is this usual?
Ruggero: Yes, it is. In colloquial Italian, the use of the subjunctive is very limited.
Ofelia: I see. Still, I like hearing and using it, as much as possible.
Ruggero: Yes, actually subjunctive makes the Italian language more deep in meaning.
Ofelia: Sì, anche io la penso così.

Outro

We hope to see you on another series!
Ofelia: Grazie per averci seguito! Alla prossima!
Ruggero: Ciao a tutti!
