Do you know how to talk about what you like to do in your free time in Italian? |
Welcome to Three Step Italian Practice by ItalianPod101.com. In this lesson, you'll practice using mi piace to talk about the things you like to do in your free time — all in Italian. |
Let's look at the main dialogue. |
Two people are having a conversation. |
Mi piace viaggiare. E tu, hai qualche hobby? |
"I like traveling. And you, do you have any hobbies?" |
Il mio hobby è la musica. |
Mi piace molto la musica classica. |
"My hobby is music. I really like classical music." |
Mi piace viaggiare. |
piace |
In Italian, the way we talk about liking something is different from English. Instead of saying "I like traveling," you say something that literally means "To me is pleasing to travel." |
We start with an indirect object pronoun — like mi for "to me" or ti for "to you." |
Then we use piace, which is the third person singular form of piacere, meaning "is pleasing." |
After that comes the activity, in the infinitive form — like viaggiare for "to travel," giocare a tennis for "to play tennis," or andare in palestra for "to go to the gym." |
Because the activity is singular, we always use piace. What changes is the pronoun at the beginning, depending on who is speaking — mi for "to me," ti for "to you," gli for "to him," le for "to her," and so on. |
Once you get used to thinking of it as "To me is pleasing..." instead of "I like...," this structure becomes really easy to use. |
Let's practice this grammar in this lesson! |
