Hi Catherine,

solo and soltanto are synonymous when used with the meaning 'only'.

For example: Ci sono soltanto/solo due mele nel frigorifero.

There are only two apples in the fridge.

However solo also has the meaning of 'alone/by oneself'. in this case soltanto cannot replace 'solo'.

Oggi sono solo a casa. Mia moglie รจ andata a fare shopping.

Today I'm at home alone. My wife went shopping.

Another way in Italian to say 'alone/by oneself' is : 'da solo'

Hope this helps.

Buono studio,

Chiara

Bueno sera,

I didn't really understand the difference between solo and soltanto?

Could you please help me there?

Thanks in advance,

Cat

Salve!

You can also say:

Siamo in ... = there are ...of us

for example:

Fino ad ora, a scrivere commenti su questa lezione siamo in 3.

So far, there are 3 of us writing comments to this lesson.

oppure:

E' possibile? Sono saliti in una cinquecento in ventitre'?!!

Is that possible? Thirtythree people got into a little 'cinquecento' car?

Saluti!
