INTRODUCTION
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia.
Daniele: And I'm Daniele.
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 20. Saying You Want to Do Something.
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing the desire to do something.
PATTERN
Asia: For example, "I would like to drink a glass of iced tea."
Daniele: Vorrei bere un bicchiere di tè freddo.
Daniele: [slow] Vorrei bere un bicchiere di tè freddo.
Asia: The pattern for expressing the desire to do something has 3 elements. First, the conditional form of the verb "to want" in the first person. This can be translated as "would like."
Daniele: Vorrei.
Asia: Second, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to drink."
Daniele: bere.
Asia: Third, a noun phrase, in this case "a glass of iced tea."
Daniele: un bicchiere di tè freddo.
Asia: Altogether, we have, "I would like to drink a glass of iced tea."
Daniele: Vorrei bere un bicchiere di tè freddo. [slow] Vorrei bere un bicchiere di tè freddo. [normal] Vorrei bere un bicchiere di tè freddo.
Asia: Start with the conditional mood, present tense, of the Italian verb “to want” conjugated in the first person singular. Follow it with an infinitive verb. Last, add one or more complements, such as a noun phrase, an adjective, an adverb and so on.
Daniele: Vorrei bere un bicchiere di tè freddo.
Asia: So remember, to express the desire to do something, start with "I would like,"
Daniele: vorrei
Asia: followed by an infinitive verb. Then, add a complement.
Asia: Here's another example meaning, "I would like to watch an Italian movie." First, conditional form of verb "to want" ("would like") in the first person.
Daniele: Vorrei.
Asia: Second, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to watch."
Daniele: guardare.
Asia: Third, a noun phrase, in this case "an Italian movie."
Daniele: un film italiano.
Asia: Altogether we have...
Daniele: Vorrei guardare un film italiano. [slow] Vorrei guardare un film italiano. [normal] Vorrei guardare un film italiano.
Asia: "I would like to watch an Italian movie."
[pause]
Daniele: Vorrei guardare un film italiano.
Asia: How do you say - "I would like to clean the car." To give you a hint, "to clean the car" is...
Daniele: pulire la macchina. [slow] pulire la macchina. [normal] pulire la macchina.
Asia: "I would like to clean the car."
[pause]
Daniele: Vorrei pulire la macchina. [slow] Vorrei pulire la macchina. [normal] Vorrei pulire la macchina.
[pause]
Daniele: Vorrei pulire la macchina.
