INTRODUCTION
Betsey: Hi everyone! Welcome back to ItalianPod101.com. This is Lower beginner Season 1 Lesson 13 - Talking About the Latest Italian Fashions. I'm Betsey.
Ofelia: Ciao! I'm Ofelia.
Betsey: In this lesson, you will learn how to express likes and dislikes, related to clothes and fashion.
Ofelia: You will also learn about the verb piacere with plural nouns. Such as 'Mi piacciono i colori forti.'
Betsey: Which means "I like bright colors." This conversation takes place in a clothing shop.
Ofelia: Mieke e Laura parlano insieme.
Betsey: It's between Mieke and Laura. The speakers are co-workers, so they'll be using informal language.
Ofelia: Ascoltiamo.
DIALOGUE
Laura: Mi piacciono molto le magliette della collezione primaverile di quest'anno!
Mieke: Ma non sono un po' troppo colorate? Io preferisco tinte neutre.
Laura: A me, invece, piacciono i colori forti come il rosso, il fucsia e l'arancione.
Mieke: Ah, guarda, che ne dici di questi pantaloni?
Laura: No, non mi piacciono- sono troppo scuri. Perché non bianchi?
Mieke: Sì, hai ragione. Bianchi sono carini!
Betsey: Let's hear the conversation one time slowly.
Laura: Mi piacciono molto le magliette della collezione primaverile di quest'anno!
Mieke: Ma non sono un po' troppo colorate? Io preferisco tinte neutre.
Laura: A me, invece, piacciono i colori forti come il rosso, il fucsia e l'arancione.
Mieke: Ah, guarda, che ne dici di questi pantaloni?
Laura: No, non mi piacciono- sono troppo scuri. Perché non bianchi?
Mieke: Sì, hai ragione. Bianchi sono carini!
Betsey: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
Laura: Mi piacciono molto le magliette della collezione primaverile di quest'anno!
Laura: I like the t-shirts of this year's spring collection very much!
Mieke: Ma non sono un po' troppo colorate? Io preferisco tinte neutre.
Mieke: But are they not a bit too colorful? I prefer neutral colors.
Laura: A me, invece, piacciono i colori forti come il rosso, il fucsia e l'arancione.
Laura: Instead, I like bright colors like red, hot pink, and orange.
Mieke: Ah, guarda, che ne dici di questi pantaloni?
Mieke: Ah, look, what do you think of these slacks?
Laura: No, non mi piacciono- sono troppo scuri. Perché non bianchi?
Laura: No, I don't like them…they are too dark. Why not white?
Mieke: Sì, hai ragione. Bianchi sono carini!
Mieke: Yes, you are right. White is nice!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ofelia: Let's talk about Italian fashion which, as everyone knows, is famous worldwide.
Betsey: ...and an essential part of the Italian culture. What are the most important centers of fashion in Italy?
Ofelia: The main centers are Milan, Rome and Florence, although the production centers of these fashion traditions are scattered everywhere across the country.
Betsey: Fashion week is held twice a year in Milan, right?
Ofelia: Yes. Have you ever heard about the ‘quadrilatero della moda'?
Betsey: No, what is it?
Ofelia: It is the area in Milan where most famous boutiques and fashion centers are located.
Betsey: Where is it exactly?
Ofelia: It's in the center of the city, and covers via Monte Napoleone, via Manzoni, via della Spiga and Corso Venezia.
Betsey: Oh, yes I've heard of those streets.
Ofelia: The other important fashion spots are Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and Corso Buenos Aires. There is a large number of fashion boutiques of the most famous brands …
Betsey: It's too bad shopping in those stores can be a bit expensive…
Ofelia: Yes, but you can also find many cheap shops in Milan, and everywhere else in Italy! Anyway, a good way to save money and enjoy fashion all at the same time, is to immerse yourself in the culture of Italian fashion by visiting the Museum of Fashion, which is called il museo della moda in Italian.
Betsey: Sounds great! Where is it?
Ofelia: It's in the beautiful rococo style Palazzo Morando, right in the quadrilatero della moda. And it's free!
Betsey: Listeners, make sure you check it out! Okay, now let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Betsey: Let's take a look at the vocabulary and phrases for this lesson.
Ofelia: The first word is.. MAGLIETTA
Betsey: Which means T-SHIRT
Ofelia: This noun derives from maglia, which is a long-sleeved shirt. Maglietta is a short-sleeved shirt and has no collar.
Betsey: Can you give us some examples with these two words?
Ofelia: Of course! The first is with MAGLIA - Portati una maglia per questa sera.
Betsey: That's "Bring a long sleeved shirt for this evening."
Ofelia: Let's see an example with MAGLIETTA. Mi piace la tua maglietta. E' molto carina.
Betsey: "I like your T-shirt. It's very nice."
Betsey: What's the next word we'll look at?
Ofelia: FUCSIA
Betsey: HOT PINK
Ofelia: The name of this color derives from the Fuchsia plant, which has hot pink flowers. It is also written as fuxia, spelt f-u-x-i-a.
Betsey: Is it masculine or feminine?
Ofelia: It is a masculine noun, even if it ends in '–a'. As an adjective, it doesn't change.
Betsey: Can you give us an example?
Ofelia: In estate porto un cappello fucsia con una maglietta fucsia.
Betsey: "In summer, I wear a hot pink hat with a hot pink T-shirt."
Betsey: The last key-word we'll look at is...
Ofelia: PANTALONI
Betsey: This means "SLACKS" or "TROUSERS"
Ofelia: Pantaloni is used both for mens' and womens' slacks or trousers. In Italian you can use the word i pantaloni as a plural noun, or il pantalone as a singular noun.
Betsey: Can you give us some examples?
Ofelia: Mamma, mi puoi comprare dei pantaloni invernali?
Betsey: "Mom, can you buy me some winter trousers?"
Ofelia: And 'Stasera mia sorella porta un pantalone beige.'
Betsey: "Tonight my sister is wearing beige pants." Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Betsey: In this lesson, you'll learn about the usage of the verb...
Ofelia: piacere.
Betsey: As we learned in lesson 7, this verb is used to express that you like something. In the negative form, it expresses dislike.
Ofelia: Here are a couple of sample sentences - Mi piace il gelato al cioccolato
Betsey: I like chocolate ice cream.
Ofelia: Non mi piacciono le fragole.
Betsey: I don't like strawberries.
Ofelia: As you may have noticed, the verb piacere works a little bit differently from other verbs in Italian. Do you remember?
Betsey: Mhmm… The subject is not the person who likes something, like in English, but the subject is the object being liked.
Ofelia: Exactly! So the conjugation of the verb piacere is.. 'Mi piace'
Betsey: I like
Ofelia: Ti piace
Betsey: you like
Ofelia: Gli piace
Betsey: he likes
Ofelia: Le piace
Betsey: she like
Ofelia: Ci piace
Betsey: we like
Ofelia: Vi piace
Betsey: you like
Ofelia: Gli piace
Betsey: they like
Ofelia: As you can see, piacere is not conjugated in six forms, but it is always in the third person singular piace when followed by a singular noun.
Betsey: For example
Ofelia: Mi piace la pasta al pomodoro.
Betsey: I like tomato sauce pasta.
Ofelia: Pasta is a singular noun.
Betsey: What if the verb is followed by a plural noun?
Ofelia: When piacere is followed by a plural noun, it is used in its third person plural, piacciono.
Betsey: Can you give us an example?
Ofelia: Non mi piacciono questi pantaloni.
Betsey: I don't like these slacks.
Ofelia: Here is one more example. Vorrei un gelato, ma questi gusti non mi piacciono.
Betsey: I'd like an ice cream, but I don't like these flavors.
Ofelia: Remember that the verb piacere is always preceded by an indirect pronoun, referring to the person who is doing the liking.
Betsey: We learned this in lesson 7.
Ofelia: Otherwise the verb piacere can be preceded by the preposition 'A' plus the name of the person who likes something.
Betsey: I see. Now, let's now focus on the usage of the verb piacere when it is not followed by a noun, but by a verb.
Ofelia: The verb piacere can be followed also by a verb in the infinitive form. In this case, the verb piacere is used in the third person singular, which is piace.
Betsey: What's an example?
Ofelia: Vi piace andare in montagna?
Betsey: Do you like going to the mountains?
Ofelia: A Marco non piace giocare a tennis.
Betsey: Marco doesn't like playing tennis. Listeners, remember to check the lesson notes to reinforce what you've learned in this lesson.

Outro

Betsey: OK. That's all for this lesson.
Ofelia: Thank you all for listening! A presto!
Betsey: See you next time!
