Hi everyone, I'm felice |
Ciao a tutti, sono Felice! |
Welcome to the Italian Whiteboard Lessons! |
In this lesson, you'll learn how to use the verb STARE. |
Let's get started! |
Sto bene! |
First, we have the verb STARE |
conjugated in the first person singular, |
sto. |
Next is an adverb, here it's bene. |
Literally, I stay fine, |
meaning |
I'm fine. |
Sto |
adverb. |
Now, let's look at the different forms of the verb STARE. |
In the present, remember that in Italian |
we usually omit the personal pronouns. |
We only use them to express emphasis or opposition. |
The first person singular is sto. |
The second person singular is stai. |
The third person singular is sta. |
The first person plural is stiamo. |
The second person plural is state. |
And the third person plural is stanno. |
Let's look at the dialogue. |
When I read, I want you to pay attention to the verb STARE. |
Find it and see how it's used in the dialogue. |
The dialogue uses informal Italian. |
Come Stai? |
How are you? |
Sto Bene, Grazie! |
I'm Fine, Thank you |
Now, let's look at another example. |
This time, the dialogue uses formal Italian. |
Come sta? |
How are you? |
Sto abbastanza bene, grazie. |
I'm pretty well, thank you. |
STARE and essere are often confused, |
but they are not interchangeable. |
Here, STARE is used to talk about well-being. |
In Italian, the formal UR, lei sta, |
is conveyed using the third person singular, sta. |
The lei in the formal lei sta is always capitalized when written. |
