Hi, everyone! I'm Felice Angelini. |
Ciao a tutti, sono Felice Angelini. |
Welcome to another Italian Whiteboard Lesson! |
In this lesson, we'll learn some of the most basic and essential social expressions in Italian. |
Let's get started! |
Okay, let's look at the vocabulary. First, we have... |
Scusa! |
Excuse me! |
[SLOW] Scusa!, Scusa! |
if you're talking to someone you don't know well who is much older than you, or your boss, or your teacher, you should opt for formal Italian |
Scusi! |
Excuse me! |
Next, we have... |
Sì? |
Yes? |
[SLOW] Sì?, Sì? |
Next, Grazie! "Thank you!" |
Grazie! |
Or, Grazie mille! "Thank you!" |
literally "A thousand thanks!" |
Grazie mille! |
Next, Di niente. "You're welcome." |
literally "not at all." |
Di niente. |
Next, Prego. "You're welcome." |
Prego. |
Or, Figurati! "Don't mention it!" |
Figurati! |
Next, Scusa! "I'm sorry!" |
Scusa! |
And in formal way, Scusi! "I'm sorry!" |
Scusi! |
Or, Mi dispiace. "I'm sorry." |
literally "For me, it is unpleasant." |
Mi dispiace. |
Next, Figurati! "Don't mention it!" |
Figurati! |
Or, Non c'è problema. "It's no problem." |
Non c'è problema. |
Let's look at the dialogue. |
Imagine a shared laundry room in an apartment building. A young man is trying to put his clothes in the washing machine before he is stopped by his neighbor. |
A: Scusa! |
A: Excuse me! |
B: Sì? |
B: Yes? |
Next, the neighbor points to a sign that the laundry machine is out of order. The young man thanks his neighbor. |
B: Ah! Grazie! |
B: Ah! Thank you! |
A: Di niente. |
A: You're welcome. |
Last, as the young man closes the washing machine, it makes a loud noise. He apologizes for that. |
B: Ops! Scusa! |
B: Oops! I'm sorry! |
A: Figurati! |
A: Don't mention it! |
Ok, let's see a few more scenarios. |
For example, imagine you're at a restaurant but you notice you don't have a fork. Get the waiter's attention and ask for a fork. The waiter is a young man. What word would you use? |
Scusa! Una forchetta, per favore. |
Excuse me, a fork, please. |
Next, imagine that you've arrived late for an appointment with an Italian client due to heavy traffic. |
What would you say? |
Scusi, ma c'era traffico. |
I'm sorry but there was traffic. |
Lastly, imagine that a friend offers to share some chocolate with you. You love chocolate. What would you say? |
Grazie, amo il cioccolato! |
