Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in Italy Series at ItalianPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Italian holidays and observances. I’m Becky, and you're listening to Season 1 Lesson 25, Flavor Fair.
Are you a gourmet? If the answer is yes, then you should go to the Salone del Gusto, which takes place once every two years in Turin in October. This is an important food and wine event, dedicated not only to Italian food and beverages, but to the cuisines of every nation in the world.
In this lesson, we’ll talk about this event and why it was created in Italy.

The Salone del Gusto is sponsored by the Piedmont Region in association with Slow Food. This association, founded in the 80s in Piemonte, has been persistently fighting to defend variety in Italian cuisines and ingredients that are at risk from the spread of fast food and industrial production methods. In addition, in recent years, its objectives have expanded to the whole world, aiming to safeguard the biodiversity of foods from all over the earth and the originality of kitchens in every nation.
One of the most celebrated elements of the Salone del Gusto is made ​​up of the so-called Presidia of Slow Food. These Presidia comprise the foods, plants or animals that are protected for their uniqueness, so that they are not lost or forgotten. In Italy alone there are more than two hundred such protected foods; one of the most famous is the green pistachio of Bronte, another is the classic mortadella of Bologna.
One of the most popular booths at the Salone del Gusto is definitely that of the Enoteca, where you can taste wines from all the vineyards of Italy – that is, unless you've had too much after your first glass! Another interesting place is the Honey Bar, where varieties of honey from all five continents are on display.
Among the most original recipes that appear at the Salone del Gusto is certainly the “beer spread,” a gelatin dessert, flavored with beer, which pairs exquisitely with cheese.
