INTRODUCTION
Marco: Hello, and welcome to the Beginner Series S2 at ItalianPOD101.com, where we study modern Italian in a fun, educational format!
Cinzia: So, brush up on the Italian that you started learning long ago, or start learning today.
Marco: Thanks for being here with us for this lesson. Cinzia, what are we looking at in this lesson.
Marco: In this lesson we will learn about the verb portare and some of its most common meanings.
Cinzia: This conversation takes place in an office
Marco: And it is between the real Cinzia and Marco
Cinzia: They are friends, therefore they will be speaking informal Italian
Marco: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Cinzia: Marco sai che giorno è oggi?
Marco: Il sei gennaio, perché?
Cinzia: Oggi è il giorno dell’Epifania, che tutte le feste si porta via.
Marco: Hai ragione! Quindi la Befana ha portato delle caramelle.
Cinzia: Per te ha portato solo carbone! Guarda!
Marco: Ma è carbone dolce! Buono!
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Cinzia: Marco sai che giorno è oggi?
Marco: Il sei gennaio, perché?
Cinzia: Oggi è il giorno dell’Epifania, che tutte le feste si porta via.
Marco: Hai ragione! Quindi la Befana ha portato delle caramelle.
Cinzia: Per te ha portato solo carbone! Guarda!
Marco: Ma è carbone dolce! Buono!
English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Cinzia: Marco sai che giorno è oggi?
Marco: Marco, do you know what day it is today?
Marco: Il sei gennaio, perché?
Marco: January sixth, why?
Cinzia: Oggi è il giorno dell’Epifania, che tutte le feste si porta via.
Marco: Today is the day of the Epiphany, which concludes all the holidays.
Marco: Hai ragione! Quindi la Befana ha portato delle caramelle.
Marco: You are right! So the Befana has brought some candies.
Cinzia: Per te ha portato solo carbone! Guarda!
Marco: She brought only coal for you! Look!
Marco: Ma è carbone dolce! Buono!
Marco: But it’s sweet coal! Good!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Cinzia: Let’s explain to our listeners what happens on this day.
Marco: Well first of all we need to hang some socks in the living room the day before the Epifania.
Cinzia: Then we just go to sleep and wait for the Befana to fill the socks with candies.
Marco: That is why children are usually the first to wake up on the 6th January.
Cinzia: And in the socks you can find all sorts of candies, but if you have been a bad girl
Marco: Or boy, you get…
Cinzia: Carbone!
Marco: Coal!
Cinzia: Luckily it is not the real carbone, but carbone dolce.
Marco: Sweet coal. It doesn’t taste bad, but it is rather hard to eat.
Cinzia: So you really got a lot of carbone.
Marco: No comment!

Lesson focus

Cinzia: The Italian verb portare is used in many different circumstances and its meaning varies according to both the context it is inserted into and the direct object that follows it.
Marco: As we have seen in the dialogue above Cinzia says
Cinzia: "... Epifania, che tutte le feste si porta via".
Marco: The expression portare via means both "to take away" and "to end, to conclude".
Cinzia: In this case only the context provides the precise meaning of the verb portare plus the noun via.
Marco: Later in the dialogue, the verb portare is used in its basic meaning of "to bring".
Cinzia: There are other additional basic meanings of the verb
