Hi beverly gee!

"ci vuole" comes from "volerci" and it means "to be necessary (for that)".

"Ci vuole pazienza con i bambini." literally means "Patience is necessary with children".

Please take a look to this lesson from the lower beginner series, it contains an explanation about this topic: https://www.italianpod101.com/2013/12/16/lower-beginner-24-running-late-for-a-conference-in-italy/

I hope this helps!

Grazie e ciao!

I prefer not to look at the lesson notes as I am going through the lesson, this us because I need to improve my listening skills when the dialogue is spoken in Italian - it sure helps!

Ciao Beverly and Jamilet

"It takes/it is required patience with children." is a more literal translation for "Ci vuole pazienza con i bambini."

While "We have to be patient with children" is a free translation and, if literally translated in Italian, should be "Dobbiamo essere pazienti con i bambini".

Grazie per la domanda! thank you for the question,

if you have other questions, please let us know!

Ciao e a presto!

Hi Beverly,

I'm also a beginner, but I believe that a better English translation of : "Ci voule pazienza con i bambini", would be: "It takes patience with children". Perhaps the wording implies a general statement. "Noi vogliamo" is "We need": more precise? Sure hope someone from Italian pod 101 gets back to us on this, since I'm basically guessing.
