Becky: Here's the informal way to ask 'How are you?' in Italian.
Ofelia: [Normal] Come stai?
Becky: First is a word meaning 'how'
Ofelia: [Normal] come [Slow] come
Becky: Next is the word meaning 'you are'
Ofelia: [Normal] stai [Slow] stai
Becky: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the informal question meaning 'How are you?'
Ofelia: [Slow] Come stai? [Normal] Come stai?
Becky: Now, imagine you're speaking to someone you don’t know well. Here's the formal way to ask, 'How are you?'
Ofelia: [Normal] Come sta?
Becky: First is a word meaning 'how'

Ofelia: Please use this question only when you meet someone after a while, for example, after more than one week. A more casual way to ask to someone you meet often would be come va? instead. Come va? is easy and it works in both formal and informal situations.
