INTRODUCTION |
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia. |
Daniele: And I'm Daniele. |
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 21. Using Verbs in Infinitive Form. |
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing that you want to do something. |
PATTERN |
Asia: For example, "I want to dance all night long." |
Daniele: Voglio ballare tutta la notte. |
Daniele: [slow] Voglio ballare tutta la notte. |
Asia: The pattern for expressing that you want to do something has 3 elements. First, the verb "to want," conjugated as "I want." |
Daniele: Voglio. |
Asia: Second, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to dance." |
Daniele: ballare. |
Asia: Third, a phrase, in this case "all night long." |
Daniele: tutta la notte. |
Asia: Altogether, we have, "I want to dance all night long." |
Daniele: Voglio ballare tutta la notte. [slow] Voglio ballare tutta la notte. [normal] Voglio ballare tutta la notte. |
Asia: Start with the verb “to want” |
Daniele: volere |
Asia: conjugated in the first person singular of the present tense, “I want.” |
Daniele: voglio |
Asia: Then, add an infinitive verb followed by a complement — either a phrase, an adverb, a noun, a noun phrase, or a phrasal verb. |
Daniele: Voglio ballare tutta la notte. |
Asia: So remember, to express that you want to do something, start with “I want,” followed by an infinitive verb, and finally, a complement. |
Asia: Here's another example meaning, "I want to read this book." First, the verb "to want," conjugated as "I want." |
Daniele: Voglio. |
Asia: Second, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to read." |
Daniele: leggere. |
Asia: Third, a noun phrase, in this case "this book." |
Daniele: questo libro. |
Asia: Altogether we have... |
Daniele: Voglio leggere questo libro. [slow] Voglio leggere questo libro. [normal] Voglio leggere questo libro. |
Asia: "I want to read this book." |
[pause] |
Daniele: Voglio leggere questo libro. |
Asia: How do you say - "I want to eat an ice-cream." To give you a hint, "to eat an ice-cream" is... |
Daniele: mangiare un gelato. [slow] mangiare un gelato. [normal] mangiare un gelato. |
Asia: "I want to eat an ice-cream." |
