INTRODUCTION |
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia. |
Daniele: And I'm Daniele. |
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 2. Using the Verb "To have." |
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about belongings. |
PATTERN |
Asia: For example, |
Asia: "You have a new watch." |
Daniele: (Tu) hai un orologio nuovo. |
Daniele: [slow] (Tu) hai un orologio nuovo. |
Asia: The pattern for talking about belongings has 4 elements. First, the pronoun, in this case "you." |
Daniele: Tu. |
Asia: Second, the verb "to have" conjugated in the second person singular. |
Daniele: hai. |
Asia: Third, a noun phrase, in this case "a watch." |
Daniele: un orologio. |
Asia: And last, the adjective, in this case "new." |
Daniele: nuovo. |
Asia: Altogether, we have.. "You have a new watch." |
Daniele: (Tu) hai un orologio nuovo. [slow] (Tu) hai un orologio nuovo. [normal] (Tu) hai un orologio nuovo. |
Asia: In Italian, the pronoun can be omitted as you can get that information from the conjugated verb. But if you want to emphasize it, you can include the pronoun at the beginning of the sentence. Then comes the verb "to have", conjugated according to the pronoun. At the end comes the noun phrase expressing what it is that you have. The noun phrase is modified by the gender and number of the noun. |
Daniele: (Tu) hai un orologio nuovo. |
Asia: So remember that to express what you have, say "you", plus the verb 'to have", plus a noun phrase. Be aware of the number and gender of the noun. |
Asia: Here is another example meaning, "You have a cozy house." First is the pronoun, in this case "you." |
Daniele: Tu. |
Asia: Second, the verb "to have" conjugated in the second person singular. |
Daniele: hai. |
Asia: Third, the noun phrase, in this case "a house." |
Daniele: una casa. |
Asia: And last, the adjective, in this case "cozy." |
Daniele: accogliente. |
Asia: Altogether we have.. |
Daniele: (Tu) hai una casa accogliente. [slow] (Tu) hai una casa accogliente. [normal] (Tu) hai una casa accogliente. |
Asia: "You have a cozy house." |
[pause] |
Daniele: (Tu) hai una casa accogliente. |
Asia: How do you say - "You have a comfortable sofa." To give you a hint, "a comfortable sofa" is.. |
Daniele: un divano comodo. [slow] un divano comodo. [normal] un divano comodo. |
Asia: You have a comfortable sofa. |
[pause] |
Daniele: (Tu) hai un divano comodo. [slow] (Tu) hai un divano comodo. [normal] (Tu) hai un divano comodo. |
[pause] |
Daniele: (Tu) hai un divano comodo. |
