Consuelo: Ciao a tutti, benvenuti.
Marco: Marco here. Upper intermediate, season 1, Lesson #23. Are You An Expert on Italian Love? Hello and welcome to italianpod101.com, the fastest, easiest and most fun way to learn Italian.
Consuelo: I am Consuelo and thanks again for being here with us for this upper intermediate season 1 lesson.
Marco: In today’s class, we will focus on pronominal verbs with Sene, approfittarsene and intendersene.
Consuelo: This conversation takes place at the wine bar.
Marco: And it’s between Irene and Filippo.
Consuelo: They will be speaking informal Italian.
Marco: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Filippo: Grazie per essere venuta.
Irene: Perché proprio qui in enoteca?
Filippo: Perché io me ne intendo di vino.
Irene: Ah certo.
Filippo: A dir la verità me ne intendo anche di donne e ti volevo dire che tu sei speciale e non devi soffrire troppo per una persona così.
Irene: Oh grazie Pippo. Comunque io non sto soffrendo, non ti preoccupare, abbiamo rotto ma è meglio così.
Filippo: Sono contento che sei tranquilla. Allora scegliamo una bottiglia e brindiamo, offro io!
Irene: In questo caso ho proprio intenzione di approfittarmene. Mmmmm. Prendiamo questo!
Filippo: Il più costoso! Va bene, però mi devi promettere che la prossima volta andiamo a cena!
Irene: Volentieri!
(Versano il vino)
Filippo: Cin cin! "Alle storie che finiscono e a quelle che iniziano!"
Irene: Ben detto!
Marco: Let’s here it slowly now.

Filippo: Actually, I'm an expert also about women, and I wanted to tell you that you are special and you don't have to suffer too much for a person like that.
Irene: Oh grazie Pippo. Comunque io non sto soffrendo, non ti preoccupare, abbiamo rotto ma è meglio così.
Irene: Oh, thank you, Pippo. Anyway, I'm not suffering. Don't worry. We broke up, but it's better this way.
Filippo: Sono contento che sei tranquilla. Allora scegliamo una bottiglia e brindiamo, offro io!
Filippo: I'm happy you're cool. Then let's choose a bottle and toast, my treat!
Irene: In questo caso ho proprio intenzione di approfittarmene. Mmmmm. Prendiamo questo!
Irene: In this case, I really plan to make the most of it. Mmmmmm. Let's have this!

Filippo: The most expensive! Okay, but you have to promise that the next time we'll go for dinner!

Consuelo: Oh yes, he is and he is obviously into Irene.
Marco: She broke up with Mirco and already found a new admirer.
Consuelo: Si, fortunata. lucky girl. By the way, I really liked Filippo’s brindisi.
Marco: Oh when they toast and he says, the relations that end and to those that begin or something like that.
Consuelo: Alle storie che finiscono e a quelle che iniziano.
Marco: When you toast in Italy, you say cin cin right?
Consuelo: Yes we do. We say cin cin and if we want to wish something, we start the sentence with the preposition A.
Marco: Like alla salute.
Consuelo: Perfetto.
Marco: Or?
Consuelo: Ai nuovi amici e così via, and so on.
Marco: I got it. To new friends.

Marco: To begin.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Marco: So Consuelo, what word are we studying today?
Consuelo: Today we are studying the verb “soffrire”.
Marco: To suffer.
Consuelo: When soffrire is followed by the preposition Per it means
Marco: To bleed for or to ache for.
Consuelo: Like soffrire per amore.
Marco: To ache for love.
Consuelo: But soffrire expresses also a physical pain.
Marco: For example
Consuelo: Soffrire di cuore.
Marco: To have a heart condition.
Consuelo: Or soffrire di epilessia.
Marco: To have a case of epilepsy.
Consuelo: There are also some expressions like soffrire la fame.
Marco: To suffer hunger.
Consuelo: Or soffrire il freddo.

Lesson focus
Consuelo: Let’s take a look at today’s grammar point.
Marco: In today’s lesson, we will continue focusing on pronominal verbs combined with a particle Sene.
Consuelo: This time we have approfittarsene
Marco: To take advantage of something or somebody,
Consuelo: And intendersene
Marco: To be an expert.
Consuelo: As we already mentioned, pronominal verbs with Sene imply a different meaning than the basic verbs they originate from.
Marco: That makes sense.
Consuelo: Approfittarsene comes from the reflexive verb approfittarsi.
Marco: But approfittarsi means to take advantage in general terms.
Consuelo: Whereas approfittarsene stands for to take advantage of something or somebody for personal reasons.
Marco: This is why the verb is basically used to express a roughly negative meaning. Let’s hear some example sentences now.
Consuelo: Scusa se me ne approfitto.
Marco: Sorry if I take advantage of it.
Consuelo: Mi dispiace che tu abbia perso il lavoro ma io me ne approfitto.
Marco: I am sorry you lost your job but I will take advantage of that.
Consuelo: Il ragazzo era molto gentile e lei se ne appprofittava.
Marco: The guy was very nice and she took advantage of that.
Consuelo: Anche se Franco ti vuole aiutare spesso non te ne approfittare.
Marco: Even if Franco often wants to help you, don’t take advantage of that. I can definitely say that there was a negative feeling within these sentences.
Consuelo: Yes, that’s why when we say me ne approfitto it is usual to hear also mi dispiace or scusa.
Marco: Yes I am sorry.
Consuelo: It’s time for the other pronominal verb for today.
Marco: Right. Now we have
Consuelo: Intendersene.
Marco: It comes from intendere.
Consuelo: Intendere is similar to capire meaning to understand.
Marco: On the other hand intendersene means to understand very well how something works.
Consuelo: In other words, it stands for to be an expert in something.
Marco: Another useful verb. Let’s start with the examples.
Consuelo: Te ne intendi di macchine?
Marco: Are you an expert on cars?
Consuelo: Carlo se ne intende proprio di vino.
Marco: Carlo is a real expert on wine.
Consuelo: Filippo se ne intende di donne?
Marco: Is Filippo an expert on woman? Certo! Sure!
Consuelo: Come on, secondo me non se ne intende per niente di donne. He doesn’t know how to deal with women at all.
Marco: Grazie Consuelo. Nice as always.
Consuelo: Come on just joking.
Marco: I have to say that: Irene non se ne intende affatto di vestiti. She doesn’t know anything about clothes.
Consuelo: Cosa?
Marco: Come on. I am just joking.
