Host1: Ciao!
Host2: Host2 here, and welcome to ItalianPod101.com. This is Upper Beginner, Lesson 3, A Beautiful Day Out in Italy

Host1: “Il parco Sigurtà è proprio incantevole. Peter, sei mai stato in questo posto? No, non ci sono mai stato”
Host2: This conversation takes place in a park, near Garda Lake. It’s midday.
Host1: Maria, Giulia e Peter parlano insieme. Sono 3 studenti universitari.
Host2: The conversation is between Maria, Giulia and Peter.
They are young university students, so they’ll be speaking informal Italian.
Host1: Ascoltiamo
Host2: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Maria: Peter, Giulia, ci possiamo fermare qui. Questa è una zona attrezzata per i pic-nic nel parco.
Giulia: Benissimo.
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.

English Host: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
Maria: Peter, Giulia, ci possiamo fermare qui. Questa è una zona attrezzata per i pic-nic nel parco.
Jason: Peter, Giulia, we can stop here. This is the picnic area in the park.
Giulia: Benissimo. Maria, avevi ragione - il parco Sigurtà è proprio incantevole. Peter, sei mai stato in questo posto?
Jason: Okay. You were right, Maria—Sigurtà Park is really gorgeous. Peter, have you ever been here?
Peter: No, non ci sono mai stato. Sono già venuto due volte al lago di Garda, ma qui è la prima volta.
Jason: No, I've never been here before. I've already been to Lake Garda twice, but it's my first time here.
Maria: E’ un immenso giardino - c’è una grande varietà di piante tra cui una quercia di 400 anni, ci sono dei giardini acquatici, un eremo e un castelletto. Ci possiamo andare dopo il pic-nic se volete.
Jason: It's a huge park—there is a great variety of plant life, including a four-hundred-year-old oak, and there are some water gardens, a hermitage, and a little castle. We can go there later if you want.
Giulia: Sì, sì, ma ora sto morendo di fame. Ecco le bevande e.. mannaggia! Ho dimenticato i bicchieri di plastica!
Jason: Yes, yes, but now I'm starving. Here are the drinks and...oh no! I forgot the plastic glasses!
Peter: Non c’è problema. Ci ho pensato io.
Jason: No worries. I brought them.
Maria: Grazie Peter! Io ho portato il dolce - un tiramisù fatto in casa. Però ci dobbiamo sbrigare a mangiarlo perchè si sta già squagliando.
Jason: Thank you, Peter! I brought the dessert—a homemade tiramisu. But we have to hurry to eat it because it's already melting.
Giulia: Non ti preoccupare al dolce io non ci rinuncio di sicuro!
Jason: Don't worry, I won't leave the dessert for sure.
Peter: Ragazze, qui però c’è il sole a picco. Mettiamoci là, sotto quella tenda. Che ne dite?
Jason: Ladies, the sun is really hot here. Let's move over there under that tent. What do you think?
Maria: Buona idea. Ci abbronzeremo più tardi mentre passeggiamo nel parco.
Jason: Good idea. We will get a tan later while walking in the park.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Host1: Have you ever been to the lake Garda?
Host2: Al lago di Garda? Yes, it’s the biggest lake in Italy. It’s close to Verona right?
Host1: Exactly. It is famous for its lemons, the wine from Bardolino and a beautiful park, called Parco Sigurtà.
Host2: I’ve heard about the wine, but not about the park. What’s special about it?
Host1: Well, to start with, it is 600.000 sq. and it is considered one of the most beautiful gardens in the world.
Host2: Wow.
Host1: The park originates from the 17th century garden of Villa Maffei and it was created by the waters of the nearby river Mincio.
Host2: I suppose there are water gardens…
Host1: Yes and also other interesting attractions like a hermitage, a 400 year-old oak and 18 different flowering lakes.
Host2: It sounds an amazing place. What’s the best season to visit it?
Host1: April is a very popular month because of the display of hundreds of tulips.

Lesson focus

Host2: The focus of this lesson is the usage of the pronoun ci.
Host1: Let’s focus first on the particle ci as a reflexive pronoun.
Host2: When using a reflexive verb ci is the reflexive pronoun for the first person plural.
Host1: For example Ci possiamo fermare a questo negozio di scarpe un momento?
Host2: Can we stop at this shoe store for a moment?
Host1: The verb is fermarsi and the first person plural is ci fermiamo.
Host2: Ci is also a reciprocal pronoun for the first person plural with verbs that express reciprocal actions like abbracciarsi, salutarsi, baciarsi, incontrarsi…
Host1: Quando incontro una vecchia amica, ci abbracciamo e ci baciamo.
Host2: When I meet an old friend of mine, we hug and kiss.
Host2: Next we’ll look at ci as an object pronoun
Host1: Here’s an example sentence
Host2: Giulia and Marco will visit us on Sunday.
Host1: Or Marta ci ha telefonato ieri e ci ha invitato alla sua festa di compleanno.
Host2: Marta called us yesterday and invited us to her birthday party.
Host1: Next we’ll focus on ci when it means here or there. It is usually used once a place has been stated.
Host2: Tra dieci minuti vado al mercato. Ci vieni anche tu?
Noemi: In ten minutes I’m going to the market. Are you coming (there) too?
Host2: Last, Ci replaces noun phrases that follow the preposition, a, as with the following verbs
Noemi: pensare a,credere a, rinunciare a, giocare a, provare a, and riuscire a.
Host2: Sono innamorato di Sofia. Ci penso sempre.
Noemi: I’m in love with Sofia. I always think about her.
Host2: In this sentence ci means a Sofia (about her).
Noemi: Another example could be Gioco a calcio di venerdì, ma ogni tanto ci gioco anche di domenica.
Host2: I play football on Fridays but sometimes I also play it on Sundays.
Noemi: Here ci gioco means a calcio.
Host2: OK. That's all for this lesson. In the lesson notes, you can find more examples on this grammar point. So be sure to read them.
Host1: A presto!
Host2: Bye-bye!
