Dialogue

Lesson Transcript

Do you know how to talk about what someone is doing in Italian?
Welcome to Three Step Italian Practice by ItalianPod101.com. In this lesson, you'll practice how to describe actions in progress and talk about what someone is doing in Italian.
Let's look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
Adam sta cucinando la cena. Isabella sta andando da una sua amica. Asia sta leggendo un libro. Te la chiamo!
"Adam is cooking dinner. Isabella is going to a friend's house. Asia is reading a book. I'll call her for you!"
Grazie!
"Thanks!"
In Italian, to talk about actions happening right now, we use the present tense of stare followed by a verb in the gerund form. This is often called the present continuous in English.
The structure is:
(Subject) + stare in present tense + gerund verb phrase
For example, Adam sta cucinando la cena means "Adam is cooking dinner."
To form the gerund:
For -are verbs, replace -are with -ando, for example, andare becomes andando.
For -ere and -ire verbs, replace the ending with -endo, for example, leggere becomes leggendo, and dormire becomes dormendo.
Now let's practice using this grammar with some sentences.
