INTRODUCTION
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia.
Daniele: And I'm Daniele.
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 9. Using the Verb "To like."
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for discussing your likes.
PATTERN
Asia: For example,
Asia: "I like playing the violin."
Daniele: Mi piace suonare il violino.
Daniele: [slow] Mi piace suonare il violino.
Asia: The pattern for discussing likes has 4 elements. First, a pronoun, in this case "to me."
Daniele: Mi.
Asia: Second, the verb "to like" conjugated in the third person singular.
Daniele: piace.
Asia: Third, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to play."
Daniele: suonare.
Asia: And last, a noun or noun phrase, in this case "the violin."
Daniele: il violino..
Asia: Altogether, we have.. "I like playing the violin."
Daniele: Mi piace suonare il violino. [slow] Mi piace suonare il violino. [normal] Mi piace suonare il violino.
Asia: In Italian, the verb
Daniele: piacere
Asia: is used to express what you like. Unlike English, the subject of the verb is the thing you like, and the following verb goes in the infinitive form. It follows the verb...
Daniele: piacere
Asia: instead of preceding it. The pronoun
Daniele: mi
Asia:meaning “to me” precedes the verb and it’s conjugated in the third person singular.
Daniele: Mi piace suonare il violino.
Asia: So remember that the sentence starts with
Daniele: mi,
Asia: then the verb
Daniele: piace
Asia: and the verb in the infinitive form. Lastly, you can add the noun or the noun phrase.
Asia: Here is another example meaning, "I like reading the newspaper." First, the pronoun, in this case "to me."
Daniele: Mi.
Asia: Second, the verb "to like" conjugated in the third person singular.
Daniele: piace.
Asia: Third, a verb in the infinitive form, in this case "to read."
Daniele: leggere.
Asia: And last, a noun or noun phrase, in this case "the newspaper."
Daniele: il giornale.
Asia: Altogether we have..
Daniele: Mi piace leggere il giornale. [slow] Mi piace leggere il giornale. [normal] Mi piace leggere il giornale.
Asia: "I like reading the newspaper."
[pause]
Daniele: Mi piace leggere il giornale.
Asia: How do you say - "I like to read comics."? To give you a hint, "comics" is..
Daniele: fumetti. [slow] fumetti. [normal] fumetti.
Asia: I like to read comics.
[pause]
Daniele: Mi piace leggere i fumetti. [slow] Mi piace leggere i fumetti. [normal] Mi piace leggere i fumetti.
[pause]
Daniele: Mi piace leggere i fumetti.
