INTRODUCTION
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia.
Daniele: And I'm Daniele.
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 3. Expressing What You Want.
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing what you want.
PATTERN
Asia: For example,
Asia: "I want a new painting."
Daniele: (Io) voglio un quadro nuovo.
Daniele: [slow] (Io) voglio un quadro nuovo.
Asia: The pattern for expressing what you want has 4 elements. First, the pronoun, in this case "I."
Daniele: Io.
Asia: Second, the verb "to want" conjugated in the first person singular..
Daniele: voglio.
Asia: Third, the noun phrase, in this case "a painting."
Daniele: un quadro.
Asia: And last, an adjective, in this case "new."
Daniele: nuovo.
Asia: Altogether, we have.. "I want a new painting."
Daniele: (Io) voglio un quadro nuovo. [slow] (Io) voglio un quadro nuovo. [normal] (Io) voglio un quadro nuovo.
Asia: In Italian, the pronoun can be omitted if it is obvious to whom you are referring. But if you want to emphasize, you can include the pronoun at the beginning of the sentence. Then comes the verb "to want", conjugated according to the pronoun. At the end comes the noun phrase expressing what it is that you want. The noun phrase is modified by the gender and number of the noun.
Daniele: (Io) voglio un quadro nuovo.
Asia: So remember that to express what you want, say "I", plus the verb 'to want", plus a noun phrase. Be aware of the number and gender of the noun.
Asia: Here is another example meaning, "I want a big pizza." First, the pronoun, in this case "I."
Daniele: Io.
Asia: Second, the verb "to want" conjugated in the first person singular.
Daniele: voglio.
Asia: Third, the noun phrase, in this case "a pizza."
Daniele: una pizza.
Asia: And last, an adjective, in this case "big."
Daniele: grande.
Asia: Altogether we have..
Daniele: (Io) voglio una pizza grande. [slow] (Io) voglio una pizza grande. [normal] (Io) voglio una pizza grande.
Asia: "I want a big pizza."
[pause]
Daniele: (Io) voglio una pizza grande.
Asia: How do you say - "I want a tall lamp." To give you a hint, "a tall lamp" is..
Daniele: una lampada alta. [slow] una lampada alta. [normal] una lampada alta.
Asia: I want a tall lamp.
[pause]
Daniele: (Io) voglio una lampada alta. [slow] (Io) voglio una lampada alta. [normal] (Io) voglio una lampada alta.
[pause]
Daniele: (Io) voglio una lampada alta.
