INTRODUCTION
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia.
Daniele: And I'm Daniele.
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 14. Saying "There is/There are."
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for stating that something exists in a location.
PATTERN
Asia: For example,
Asia: "There's a pizza in the oven."
Daniele: C'è una pizza in forno.
Daniele: [slow] C'è una pizza in forno.
Asia: The pattern for stating that something is in a location has 3 elements. First, the verb phrase indicating existence, in this case "there is."
Daniele: C'è.
Asia: Second, a noun or noun phrase, in this case "a pizza."
Daniele: una pizza.
Asia: Third, a prepositional phrase, in this case "in the oven."
Daniele: in forno.
Asia: Altogether, we have, "There's a pizza in the oven."
Daniele: C'è una pizza in forno. [slow] C'è una pizza in forno. [normal] C'è una pizza in forno.
Asia: Start with the verb phrase indicating existence, “there is or there are.”
Daniele: c’è or ci sono
Asia: The subject, a noun or a noun phrase, is followed by a prepositional phrase. The prepositions of place also include the determinative article referring to the noun or noun phrase that comes after.
Daniele: C'è una pizza in forno.
Asia: So remember, to state that something exists in a location, start with "there is" or "there are," followed by the subject. Last, use a prepositional phrase which includes a preposition of place and a noun or noun phrase.
Asia: Here’s another example meaning, "There's a glass on the table." First, the verb phrase indicating existence, in this case "there is."
Daniele: C'è.
Asia: Second, a noun or noun phrase, in this case "a glass."
Daniele: un bicchiere.
Asia: Third, a prepositional phrase, in this case "on the table."
Daniele: sul tavolo.
Asia: Altogether we have...
Daniele: C'è un bicchiere sul tavolo. [slow] C'è un bicchiere sul tavolo. [normal] C'è un bicchiere sul tavolo.
Asia: "There's a glass on the table."

Daniele: C'è un bicchiere sul tavolo.
Asia: How do you say - "There is a fountain in the square." To give you a hint, "a fountain" is...
Daniele: una fontana. [slow] una fontana. [normal] una fontana.
Asia: "There is a fountain in the square."
[pause]
Daniele: C'è una fontana nella piazza. [slow] C'è una fontana nella piazza. [normal] C'è una fontana nella piazza.
[pause]
Daniele: C'è una fontana nella piazza.
