INTRODUCTION
Asia: Hi everyone, I'm Asia.
Daniele: And I'm Daniele.
Asia: And welcome to Must-Know Italian Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 11. Asking About Time.
Asia: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about time.
PATTERN
Asia: For example,
Asia: "When does the bakery open?"
Daniele: Quando apre il fornaio?
Daniele: [slow] Quando apre il fornaio?
Asia: The pattern for asking about time has 3 elements. First, an interrogative pronoun of time, "when."
Daniele: Quando.
Asia: Second, the verb, "open", conjugated in the third person singular.
Daniele: apre .
Asia: Third, a noun, in this case "the bakery."
Daniele: il fornaio.
Asia: Altogether, we have.. "When does the bakery open?"
Daniele: Quando apre il fornaio? [slow] Quando apre il fornaio? [normal] Quando apre il fornaio?
Asia: Start with the interrogative pronoun of time
Daniele: quando
Asia: “when”, followed by a conjugated verb. The verb is conjugated according to the noun that follows. After the verb comes the subject, a noun or noun phrase.
Daniele: Quando apre il fornaio?
Asia: So remember that to ask about time, start with the word ...
Daniele: quando
Asia: meaning “when”, followed by a conjugated verb in the third person singular or plural. Last, add a noun.
Asia: Here is another example meaning, "When does the pizza house close?" First, an interrogative pronoun of time, "when."
Daniele: Quando.
Asia: Second, the verb "close", conjugated in the third person singular.
Daniele: chiude.
Asia: Third, a noun, in this case "the pizza house."
Daniele: la pizzeria.
Asia: Altogether we have..
Daniele: Quando chiude la pizzeria? [slow] Quando chiude la pizzeria? [normal] Quando chiude la pizzeria?
Asia: "When does the pizza house close?"
[pause]
Daniele: Quando chiude la pizzeria?
Asia: How do you say - "When does Carlo arrive?" To give you a hint, "arrive" is..
Daniele: arriva. [slow] arriva. [normal] arriva.
Asia: When does Carlo arrive?
[pause]
Daniele: Quando arriva Carlo? [slow] Quando arriva Carlo? [normal] Quando arriva Carlo?
[pause]
Daniele: Quando arriva Carlo?
