Cinzia: Questa settimana sono stato molto occupato.
Marco: I have been very busy this week. Now let’s take a look at today’s grammar.

Lesson focus

Cinzia: So as we said before, today we are going to study the periodo ipotetico, in particular periodo ipotetico della possibilità.
Marco: Of the possibility. Regarding its meaning, this hypothetical period is very similar to the periodo ipotetico della realtà, the one we saw in the past lesson. The main difference is that the condition expressed in the subordinate clause is less likely to happen though still possible.
Cinzia: In both types of if clauses, the main sentence refers to the future. Now please pay attention because we are going to take a look at two examples, one explaining the first type and the other one explaining the second.
Marco: Periodo ipotetico della realtà.
Cinzia: Se Mario ha la macchina, andiamo a fare una passeggiata in montagna.
Marco: If Mario has the car, we go hiking.
Cinzia: This is the first type of the hypothetical period that means periodo ipotetico della realtà.
Marco: It’s a very real possibility. It’s, let’s say, maybe 90% possible.
Cinzia: Yes in fact, because it’s real possibility it’s something that can really happen, we are expressing it with presente indicativo tense.
Marco: With the simple present.
Cinzia: The second example is Se Mario avesse la macchina, andremmo a fare una passeggiata in montagna.
Marco: If Mario had the car, we would go hiking.
Cinzia: This second sentence expresses the same identical connection of the sentence before except that the condition is less likely to happen.
Marco: For that reason, it is the periodo ipotetico della possibilità.
Cinzia: Which requires the congiuntivo presente
Marco: Present subjunctive
Cinzia: In the subordinate clause. Which requires the congiuntivo imperfetto
Marco: Imperfect subjunctive
Cinzia: In the subordinate clause. While it requires the condizionale presente
Marco: Present conditional.
Cinzia: In the main clause. Let me just repeat the example. Se Mario avesse la macchina, subordinate clause imperfect subjunctive, andremmo a fare una passeggiata in montagna, main clause present conditional.
Marco: But let’s have one last example for our students.
Cinzia: Se avessimo tempo, andremmo a fare shopping.
Marco: If we had time, we would go shopping.
Cinzia: Which is so true.

Outro

Marco: But hey the lesson is finished. We can go.
Cinzia: Oh that’s true. Grazie a tutti, a presto.
Marco: Andiamo a fare shopping, ciao.
Cinzia: Ciao.
