Hi everyone, I'm Felice.
Ciao a tutti, sono Felice!
Welcome to the Italian Whiteboard Lessons!
In these lessons you'll learn how to say what city you are from.
Let's get started!
Sono di New York
First we have the verb essere, conjugated based on the subject.
In this case it's in the first person singular, sono.
Next is the simple preposition di, meaning from.
Then we have the name of the city,
here it's New York, literally I'm from New York,
but the meaning is I'm from New York.
So, di and city.
Let's look at the dialogue.
When I read I want you to pay attention to how to say where are you from.
Find the city name and see how it's used in the dialogue.
The dialogue uses formal Italian.
Di dov'è?
Where are you from?
Sono di Sydney.
I'm from Sydney.
Now let's look at another speaking example.
Paolo Parisi.
Mark Lee.
Di dov'è?
Sono di New York.
Where are you from?
I'm from New York.
In Italian, when saying where are you from,
remember to use the simple preposition di,
only with cities, not with countries.
Some city names are the same as the original,
New York, New York, Tokyo, Tokyo,
but others are completely different.
Beijing, Pechino, Barcelona, Barcellona, Paris, Parigi.
So, have a check before you say where are you from okay.
