Hi, everyone! I’m Felice Angelini.
Ciao a tutti, sono Felice Angelini.
Welcome to the Italian Whiteboard Lessons!
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to say where you are from, and basic vocabulary related to the Italian geography.
Ok! Let’s look at the Italian cities.
The first is Aosta.
Aosta, Aosta.
Next.
Turin. Turin? Wait, wait, no… In Italian, we say Torino.
Torino. Torino.
So please pay attention to this different pronunciation, sometimes, we have for city.
Next. Milan? Milano.
Milano, Milano.
Genova.
Genova, Genova.
Trento.
Trento, Trento.
Trieste.
Trieste, Trieste.
Venice? Venezia.
Venezia, Venezia.
Bologna? Bologna.
Bologna, Bologna.
Ok, this is the North. Then, the Center.
Florence? Firenze.
Firenze, Firenze.
Ancona.
Ancona, Ancona.
Perugia? Perugia.
Perugia, Perugia.
Rome? Roma.
Roma, Roma.
Then, the South.
L'Aquila.
L'Aquila, L'Aquila.
Naples? Napoli.
Napoli, Napoli.
Bari.
Bari, Bari.
Potenza.
Potenza, Potenza.
Catanzaro.
Catanzaro, Catanzaro.
And then, the islands.
Palermo, Palermo.
Palermo, Palermo.
Cagliari? Cagliari!
Cagliari, Cagliari.
Wow! Completed!
Well! Bene! Now, I imagine a dialogue between two friends. Sure, informal Italian. One question and one answer. Listen.
Di dove sei? “Where are you from?”
Sono di Roma. “I’m from Rome.”
Ok, Roma.
I want to try another city. Maybe… Milan, Florence, and Empoli. You know Empoli? It’s near Florence.
Milan, Florence, and Empoli. Ok, listen, this time, only the answer.
Sono di Milano.
Sono di Firenze.
Sono di Empoli.
Did you notice? we always use the same pattern. Let’s check.
Sono di [CITY NAME].
So you can put another different city name and try with a different example. But pay attention, one advice. In this case, when I use this answer, we have three words - Sono, di, city name. Ok, please don’t put a stop between these three words. You know, try to say these three words in a canzone, like a canzone - Sono di...
You remember?
Sono di Bari.
Sono di Bari.
Ok, that’s right.
Italy has a long shape like a boot, that’s why it’s usually divided in three main sections: Nord “North,” “Center” Centro, and “South” Sud.
And Nord from above Firenze and South from below L'Aquila, not Rome, L'Aquila.
And the island, you know, Sicilia, Sardegna, not Corsica.
