It depends on the context.

If you are in a "bar" then "caffè" and "espresso" are synonyms, because they mostly only serve "espresso."

If you are somewhere else, for example at someone's home, then "caffè" indicates the coffee made with a moka pot and "espresso" indicates the coffee made with an espresso machine ?

- Would saying un espresso mean exactly the the same thing to an Italian as saying un caffe’.
