Italian Conjugations

Postby allforgod » May 8th, 2009 4:29 pm

I'm having trouble understanding the Italian endings. Like all the conjugations and when to use them. Can anyone help?

The conjugations simply refer to the ending of the verbs. You need to learn the spelling of the verb like any other word and then you can decide what conjugation it falls into.
There are 3 of them:
1st - Verbs ending in 'are' such as Amare (to love),
2nd - verbs ending in 'ere' such as Prendere (to take)
3rd - verbs ending in 'ire' such as Partire (to leave).

They are always refered to in this order (1st conjugation is 'are', 2nd is 'ere' and so on. If you remember what a verb stem ends in you can usually use that to figure out what end you put on it when referring to yourself or he/she etc. For eg. Partire - to leave. The ending for 'I go' in the present tense is Parto i.e. an 'o' replaces the 'ire'. The best way is to get all the verbs you can (some on this website and the PDFs that go with the lessons) and write/type them all out. You'll start to see how they form a pattern. The only exceptions to the rules are the few that are called irregular verbs and these simply need to be learned off by heart as there is usually no pattern to them.

Hope this helps! :D
