INTRODUCTION

Jason: Ciao! Jason here.
Cristina: Cristina here! Welcome back to ItalianPod101.com's Intermediate Series. This is lesson 10, A Visit Home from Italy
Jason: In this lesson you'll learn how to use the future perfect (futuro anteriore) with expressions like non appena, quando, dopo che. Such as…
Cristina: Dopo che ti avrò accompagnato all’aereoporto, andrò da un vecchio amico.
Jason: "After taking you to the airport, I’ll visit an old friend of mine."
This conversation takes place in Sandro’s car, on the way to the airport.
Cristina: Sandro e James parlano insieme.
Jason: The conversation is between Sandro and James.
The speakers are co-workers and friends, therefore they'lll be speaking informal language.
Cristina: Ascoltiamo!
Jason: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
James: Grazie per il passaggio in aereoporto. Mi dispiace però che sia un po’ fuori mano per te.
Sandro: Figurati. Dopo che ti avrò accompagnato all’aereoporto, andrò da un vecchio amico che abita qui vicino. Ci siamo messi d’accordo proprio stamattina.
James: Benissimo.
Sandro: Che farai in vacanza? Ti riposerai?
English Host: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
James: Grazie per il passaggio in aereoporto. Mi dispiace però che sia un po’ fuori mano per te.
Sandro: Figurati. Dopo che ti avrò accompagnato all’aereoporto, andrò da un vecchio amico che abita qui vicino. Ci siamo messi d’accordo proprio stamattina.

On the way to the airport
Jason(On the way to the airport)
James: Grazie per il passaggio in aereoporto. Mi dispiace però che sia un po’ fuori mano per te.
Jason: Thanks for the lift to the airport. I'm just sorry that it's a bit out of the way for you.
Sandro: Figurati. Dopo che ti avrò accompagnato all’aereoporto, andrò da un vecchio amico che abita qui vicino. Ci siamo messi d’accordo proprio stamattina.
Jason: Don't worry. After taking you to the airport, I'll visit an old friend of mine who lives nearby. We made an arrangement this morning.
James: Benissimo.
Jason: Very well.
Sandro: Che farai in vacanza? Ti riposerai?
Jason: What are you going to do on vacation? Relax?
James: Non direi, la passerò all’insegna della famiglia. A Natale non si puo’ fare altrimenti. Non appena mi sarò riposato dal viaggio, mia madre ha organizzato di andare a trovare la nonna. Un altro viaggio di otto ore in macchina!
Jason: I wouldn't say so. I'll spend it only with the family. At Christmas I can't do otherwise. As soon as I will have rested from the flight, my mother has planned to visit grandma. Another eight-hour trip by car!
Sandro: Non ti invidio.
Jason: I don't envy you.
James: Appunto. Ah, posso chiederti il favore di tenere d’occhio la mia casa mentre sono via? Ho sentito che Natale è il periodo migliore per i ladri di appartamento.
Jason: Exactly. Oh, can I ask you the favor of keeping an eye on my house while I am away? I heard that Christmas is the best time for burglars.
Sandro: Non c’è problema. Però anch’io tornerò a casa appena le prove dell’orchestra saranno terminate. Io sono un grande amante delle riunioni familiari.
Jason: No problem. But I will also return home as soon as the orchestra rehearsals will be over. I'm a big fan of family get-togethers myself.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Jason: What is some popular Christmas music in Italy during the holiday season?
Cristina: Well, the Christmas song list is varied and it's quite common to attend Christmas concerts.
Jason: Like at the Scala theatre in Milan?
Cristina: Yes, but there are also a lot of smaller concerts organized by local schools or community centers.
Jason: What kind of music is played?
Cristina: Classical music and opera, and Christmas carols.
Jason: Like White Christmas?
Cristina: Sure, but the Italian version of White Christmas is called Bianco Natale.
Jason: I see. And what are other traditional Italian carols?
Cristina: Tu Scendi Dalle Stelle, composed near Naples around 1754. This is often sung in church during Christmas Mass.
Jason: How about Silent Night?
Cristina: In Italian the title of this carol is Astro del Ciel. Another famous carol is Caro Gesù Bambino.
Jason: I think I know this one. It’s a song about a little child who asks baby Jesus to come down from Heaven to play with him since he is too poor to have toys.
Cristina: Exactly. It’s a bit sad but also has a very sweet melody.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jason: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jason: Let's take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first one we'll look at is...
Cristina: FUORI MANO
Jason: "OUT OF THE WAY"
Cristina: Here's a sample sentence. Quel ristorante è fuori mano. Ci andiamo un’altra volta
Jason: "That restaurant is out of the way. Let’s go there another time."
Cristina: In general fuori mano means "out of the way" or "far" and if used together with the verbs vivere or abitare is best translated as "off the beaten track"
Jason: Can you give us an example?
Cristina: La tua abitazione è un po’ troppo fuori mano.
Jason: "Your house is too off the beaten track."
Cristina: An expression with opposite meaning is a portata di mano.
Jason: It means that something is "close", "easy to get or to get to."
Jason: What's the next one we'll look at?
Cristina: ANDARE A TROVARE
Jason: "TO VISIT"
Cristina: Here's a sample sentence. E’ un po’ di tempo che non vai a trovare la nonna.
Jason: "You haven’t visited grandmother in a while now."
Cristina: It is not possible to use the verb visitare with people because that means to pay a visit to someone in hospital.
Jason: So when do I use the verb visitare?
Cristina: Visitare is more used for example when visiting museums, cities and sightseeing spots.
Jason: Can you give us an example?
Cristina: L’ anno scorso ho visitato i musei vaticani.
Jason: "Last year I visited the Vatican museums."

Lesson focus

Jason: The focus of this lesson is the usage of the future perfect (future anteriore) with expressions like non appena, quando, dopo che.
Cristina: For example, Dopo che ti avrò accompagnato all’aereoporto, andrò da un vecchio amico.
Jason: "After taking you to the airport, I’ll visit an old friend of mine."
Cristina: Let’s review the usage of the future anteriore.
Jason: The futuro anteriore expresses a future action that happens before another action expressed in the futuro semplice. For example…
Cristina: Quando avrò finito questo lavoro, andrò a casa.
Jason: "When I will have finished this job, I’ll go home."
Cristina: The action of finishing the job comes before the action of going home. Jason
Cristina: Let’s now look at the formation of the futuro anteriore.
Jason: As we said before, the future perfect tense is a compound tense formed with the regular future-tense form of the auxiliary verb avere or essere and the past participle of the acting verb.
Cristina: The choice of the auxiliary verb follows the same rules as for the passato prossimo.
Jason: For example…
Cristina: Quando tu arriverai, noi saremo già partiti per le vacanze in montagna.
Jason: "When you will arrive, we will have already left for our vacation in the mountains."
Cristina: Partire requires the auxiliary verb essere.
Jason: Can you give us a sample sentence with the auxiliary verb avere?
Cristina: A giugno avrò finito gli esami all’università e potrò andare in vacanza.
Jason: "In June I will have finished my university exams and will be able to go on vacation."
Cristina: There are some time expressions with which the future perfect is often used.
Jason: For example?
Cristina: appena/ non appena
Jason: (solo) dopo che
Cristina: quando
Jason: Here is a sample sentence with appena.
Cristina: Anch’io tornerò a casa appena le prove dell’orchestra saranno terminate.
Jason: "I will also return home as soon as the orchestra rehearsals will be over."
Cristina: Let’s now listen to another example…
Jason: …using the expression solo dopo che.
Cristina: Solo dopo che avrai ottenuto il permesso di soggiorno, potrai lavorare in Italia.
Jason: "Only after you will have obtained the permit of stay, you will be allowed to work in Italy."
Jason: And one more sample sentence starting with quando.
Cristina: Quando saranno arrivati tutti gli ospiti, inizieremo la cena.
Jason: "When all the guests will have arrived, we’ll start the dinner."

Outro

Jason: OK. That's all for this lesson. In the lesson notes, you can find more examples on this grammar point. So be sure to read them.
Cristina: A presto!
Jason: Bye-bye!
