The Befana

The night between the 5th and the 6th of January is a special night for Italian children when they await the mythic figure of la Befana. la Befana, an old tattered but kind woman arrives in the night to leave gifts in the children’s stockings. Children that have behaved well receive candy, sweets and nuts, while children that have behaved poorly receive coal or ashes. Each house leaves an orange and a glass of wine for the Befana, when the children wake the next morning they find the snack consumed.

La Befana is depicted as an old woman wearing a dark long skirt, an apron with pockets and a shawl. She is covered in soot as she climbs down the chimney to fill the stockings and flies about on a broom. She is very similar to the figure of Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus although she strangely resembles a witch! I remember very clearly my Italian grandmother who made us hang our stockings between the 5th and 6th of January for la Befana. Luckily she never left me coal!

The holiday of the Befana, the 6th of January, marks the Epiphany in the Christian religion. The Epiphany is the day the three Wise Men arrived bearing gifts at the manger of Christ Child and traditionally signals the end of the Christmas season. The gifts brought by la Befana remember the gifts brought by the Wise Men to Baby Jesus. In fact, the name Befana derives from the mispronunciation of the Italian word for Epiphany, Epifania. The Befana’s exact origins are unclear, it is said she descends from magical pre Christian traditions, folklore and Christian elements. Nevertheless the character of la Befana maintains an important place in the minds of Italy’s children and culture.

-------Lesson Dialog-------

----Informal English----
Rome: a bit of nightlife

Just as everywhere else in the world even in Rome the nightlife depends on young folk and on the networks of congregation that they create. Thus if you want to have fun just follow people under 30 and try to guess where the wind is blowing.

Let’s start from logistics: Rome has three universities but only two of them are downtown enough to be able to be inserted into the urban tissue: La Sapienza and Roma 3. Around them has developed the whole industry of students’ services: lodging, food, clothes and, of course, entertainment. The areas directly implicated are the Termini station, together with the Nomentano and Tiburtino districts, as well as the Ostiense station, that is the S. Paolo district. If you are in one of these two areas and looking for some clubbing, the highest concentration is, respectively, in piazza Bologna and via Libetta.

Other places do exist where you can find one club after another: the whole Trastevere area or Testaccio, for example, is a place where the entertainment business relies on the continuous tide of tourists, as well as the towns decades of tradition.

The most important thing is what kind of person you are, and what you need to do, in order to have fun: in sum what social group you belong to. Trastevere is the most international area and there you’ll find people from all around the world and clubs for any taste. Testaccio is instead, a little more </itunes:summary>

Etna

Etna
Etna has a thousand faces - the volcano, the natural beauty, the forests, the fauna, the flora, the myths and much more. The volcano is very active and lies on the eastern part of the island of Sicily, between the cities of Catania and Messina. Etna is the highest and the most active volcano in Europe. Its location above the gulf of Catania and its closeness to the sea make it even more fascinating.
Every year it attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. The common image of a volcano brings to mind hostile environments without vegetation. But these conditions are found only above 2000 meters. In the intermediate zones of the volcano we find a florid environment rich with vegetation. Therefore on Etna it is possible to do various types of skiing and trail hiking. It is truly an emotion to breathe the pure mountain air and observe the magic of a lunar landscape, all this a few kilometers from the Ionian sea. When I can, I head to Sicily for a week-end of skiing. The snow and the panorama are an amazing combination.
There are many myths and legends that surround Etna. Its secret and its power have inspired men to create explanations for the volcanic events that at the time were considered divine events. In fact, the ancient Greeks believed that it was home to the god of fire, Vulcan, and the monster Cyclops. Furthermore the volcano has been cited by many Greek and Roman poets like Homer, Virgil and Ovid.
Trust me, its mystery is still alive today!

----Informal English----

Della Scala family

Della Scala family, or Scaligera family, was a dynasty that ruled over Verona for one hundred twenty-five years, from 1262 to 1387.
It was with Mastino I that the Venetian city changed its political structure from medieval Common to Seigniory in a non-traumatic manner, even though the actual change took place with Mastino’s brother, Alberto. The Seigniory reached the peak of its importance and fame during the reign of Cangrande.

The first members of della Scala family were in Verona since the XI century, they probably descended from either the nobles of “Scalemburg” or Jacopo Fico, a professional ladder maker.
The real power was above all into the hands of the merchant and craft guilds, while feudatories (landlords owning land by feudal fee) didn’t have any power, because they were excluded from political offices by the city statute. The centralization of power was favored by the great power held by the merchant class, which della Scala family was part of.
Cangrande della Scala was an enlightened and respected lord; he hosted Dante, (who had been exiled from Florence) at the palace prepared specifically for political refugees, scientists, poets and talented artists whom Cangrande generously covered with money and gifts. Dante dedicated an honorable mention to Cangrande in a canto (Paradise, XVII) of the Divine Comedy: Dante hoped that this powerful and valiant prince could accomplish the Italian reunification.
