What opportunities or could-have-beens have you watched slip regretfully through your hands throughout your life? Were you too afraid to ask the beautiful girl in your math class to go to the dance because you thought you were a nerd—she married a nerd, you know? Never tried out for cheerleader because you were petrified of performing in front of crowds—a week later, you wowed your gym class with “the most beautiful back handspring they had ever seen,” and realized you actually LIKE the attention. A few weeks ago, Innovative Language sent out an e-mail offering the chance of a lifetime to become a Founding Father for one (or ALL) of our new language-learning websites—you were too busy to be one of the extremely fortunate individuals to respond. “Joe, is that right?” (Yes, that’s right.) “Joe? Am I saying it right?” (Yes. Your English pronunciation is perfect. I wish my Italian was so good! As I was saying, I’m so glad to finally be in Italy…) “I’m sorry, how do you spell that? Is it J-O?” (There’s an E on the end. So as I was saying, I’m so happy to finally be in Italy…) “That’s a very peculiar name, Yo“. (It’s “Joe” actually…) “You know, it might be easier if we just call you Giuseppe.” (Um… Giuseppe?) “Yes, ‘Joe’ is just such a peculiar name to us Italians, no one is going to remember it, so it might be easier if you just introduce yourself as ‘Giuseppe’.” (Um… well, if…) “Just a suggestion. Either everyone’s going to get the pronunciation wrong, or they’re just not going to remember. Going by ‘Giuseppe’ would just make things a lot easier.”
In today’s Culture Lesson we’re learning about two Italian names: Giuseppe/Giuseppina and Chiara. We’ll be learning about the origin of these names, and some famous people who have had them. For more on Italian culture and language, come to ItalianPod101.com!
