In this lesson, in both the audio and the pdf, these sentences are given as examples of the passato remoto tense:

"Siamo andati in Inghilterra l'anno scorso."
"Stamattina ho incontrato tua sorella."

Maybe I'm confused, but isn't this the passato prossimo tense?</description>
