“You’ve never heard of David?” You ask incredulously! You’ve met a young Italian art student in a Florence cafe. You have struck up a conversation with him about Florence, and all of the amazing art that you’ve seen. Florence was, after all, the center of the European Renaissance. And Michelangelo’s David, the most famous sculpture in the world, is kept in Florence. Heck, Florence even has a spare David that they keep just in case. Incredulous, you show your new friend a photo of Michelangelo’s masterpiece. His eyebrow raises. “Oh!” he says in surprise. “You mean Davide.”

Michelangelo, apart from being an artistic genius, was of course Italian. So impress your friends by referring to his masterpiece with its proper Italian name. (After all, you don’t ever call the ‘Pietà’ the ‘Peter’, do you?)

In today’s Italian lesson we’ll be learning some of the history behind the name ‘Davide’, as well as some famous people who had that name. We’ll also be learning about the Italian name Cinzia. Can you think of anyone famous or well known with that name? Learn Italian with ItalianPod101.com!

Cynthia says:

Mi chiamo Cinzia………or in English, Cynthia. Additionally, you might find it interesting to know that, according to legend. Artemis (goddess of the moon) was said to have been born on Mount Cynthus. My middle name is Diana who was the Roman goddess of the hunt and the moon. I guess my parents were into Roman & Greek mythology!! I will be in Italy during the full moon….maybe something special will happen
