Your waiter brings you your dish, to everyone’s applause and laughter. A small, well cooked monkey is spread-eagled on your plate. “What is this??” you ask. “It’s what you ordered!” says your friend next to you. “What? I didn’t want this!” you protest. “But then why did you agree to it?” your friend replies. “The waiter asked everyone in clear Italian if they’d like to try the deep-fried gibbon, and you just nodded!” “I didn’t hear what he said!” you despair. “I was just nodding along, because I didn’t want to seem stupid!” “Well, you should have said that you didn’t hear,” says your friend unsympathetically. “Or you should have asked me what he said.” He shrugs. “You’ll just have to eat it now.”

If you don’t hear what someone says in Italian, don’t be afraid to ask, “What did he say?” Nodding along like an idiot can be disastrous.
