What was the mood in the room when Pope Julius II first approached Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel? How about when the Machiavelli’s first meeting with the Medici family, to pitch them an idea for a book on politics? Or when a shy teenager named Leonardo da Vinci approached local painter Verrocchio for an apprenticeship? We may never know. But we might guess what their first words to each other were. Our guess is that young Leonardo’s first words on that fateful day which started his professional career were, “Salve, mi chiamo Leonardo da Vinci. Piacere di conoscerti.” or “Hello, my name is Leonardo da Vinci. Pleased to meet you.”

Learn Italian with ItalianPod101.com! Today we are learning to introduce ourselves, much as Machiavelli, da Vinci or Michelangelo might have done on those fateful days. The first step in speaking Italian on a vacation in Italy or at home is meeting Italian people. In today’s lesson you’ll be learning how to say your name in Italian, in formal (polite) and informal speech. Benvenuti al nostro corso!
